One of my favorite activities in class is to set up stations and have students rotate through 3-4 different places. I use stations for reviewing a few concepts or for practicing one concept a few different ways. For creating groups for stations, sometimes I just number off in class by 4's as that is the typical number of stations I have in my hour long classes. This makes it a nice 11-12 minutes for each station, allowing a few minutes to get started and few minutes to wrap things up. I have also chosen my groups ahead of time and when I do that, they are usually by ability level. When I do this, I basically stick close to the group that needs me the most!
