One reason I love flipping my classroom is that I feel it lowers the stress on our 8th graders. Many have commented over the past three years how they feel better about math due to not being to overwhelmed and stressed about all the practicing at home on their own. I keep the videos short (8 minutes or less) so that they get the basics, not the deeper pieces. Since we are practicing in class together, their questions get answered faster and often by peers. Bonus! Students are explaining things to each other, teaching themselves and they don't even realize it!
I give students a schedule at the start of every week so they see what our plan is for Monday - Friday. They see details of in-class work, quick checks and outside of class work too. They know when upcoming assessments will be given. They can then work ahead or get caught up according to other school work and/or situations at home. I think this is the biggest part that eases stress and anxiety because there are no surprises. They can plan, change it up if needed, see me for things ahead of or behind schedule and eventually, we all get to the same ending.
